Frequently Asked Questions

American Outdoor Grills, often referred to as AOG, are built with commercial-grade 304 stainless steel throughout, including the cooking grids, burners, and cabinet components. This sets them apart from many consumer-grade grills that only use stainless steel on visible exterior panels while using cheaper materials internally. AOG grills feature a distinctive rounded hood with a satin finish, a recessed infrared backburner for rotisserie cooking, an analog thermometer, and stainless steel rod cooking grids. They are designed to be paired with outdoor kitchen islands and are available in built-in and freestanding configurations in sizes ranging from 24" to 48".

A built-in grill is designed to be dropped into an outdoor kitchen island or a custom counter cutout, with the sides and back enclosed by the surrounding structure. This gives a sleek, integrated look that is ideal for permanent outdoor kitchen setups. A freestanding grill has its own cart or legs and can be moved around your patio or deck as needed. If you are planning a permanent outdoor kitchen installation, a built-in model is the better choice. If you want flexibility or are not ready to commit to a permanent setup, a freestanding model gives you the same quality cooking performance with portability.

American Outdoor Grills are available in both natural gas and liquid propane (LP) configurations. Natural gas models connect directly to your home's permanent gas line and are ideal for built-in outdoor kitchen installations where you want a continuous fuel supply without managing tanks. Propane models use standard 20 lb LP tanks and offer more placement flexibility. Both fuel types deliver the same cooking performance. It is important to order the correct fuel type for your setup, as the two are not interchangeable without a proper conversion kit.

The right grill size depends on how many people you typically cook for and how much counter space you have available. A 24-inch grill offers a compact cooking surface suitable for couples or small families of two to four people. A 30-inch model is the most popular all-around size, comfortably handling meals for four to six guests. A 36-inch or 48-inch grill is ideal for larger gatherings and serious outdoor cooks who want ample space to cook multiple items simultaneously. As a general rule, larger grills also deliver more total BTU output, which means better searing temperatures and faster recovery time when cooking large cuts of meat.

An infrared backburner is a vertically mounted burner located at the rear wall of the grill that is specifically designed for rotisserie cooking. Instead of placing food directly over the main burners, the rotisserie motor turns the food slowly in front of the infrared backburner, which delivers intense, even radiant heat for perfectly roasted whole chickens, prime rib, and other large cuts. American Outdoor Grills include a recessed infrared backburner, spit rod, and motor as standard features. If you enjoy rotisserie cooking or want to roast whole birds and roasts on the grill, this is a major benefit over grills that only offer an optional rotisserie add-on.

After each cook, preheat the grill for 10 to 15 minutes on high to burn off food residue, then brush the cooking grates with a stainless steel grill brush while still hot. For the exterior stainless steel panels, wipe down with a damp cloth and a small amount of dish soap, always moving in the direction of the metal grain to avoid scratching. A dedicated stainless steel cleaner and polish applied a few times per year will help protect the finish from moisture, grease, and UV exposure. Clean the burner tubes and ports at the start of each grilling season to remove any spider webs or debris that could block gas flow. Always cover the grill when not in use to extend its lifespan.

Freestanding AOG grills on a cart can be assembled and used by a homeowner without professional help since they simply connect to a propane tank or to an existing natural gas quick-connect fitting. For built-in models being dropped into an outdoor kitchen island, the installation of the gas line connection must be done by a licensed gas professional, especially when connecting to a permanent natural gas supply. The physical fitting of the grill head into the island cutout can typically be done by the homeowner or a general contractor. Always verify that the cutout dimensions match the grill's specified installation clearances before ordering.

A warming rack is a secondary cooking surface positioned above the main grates, closer to the top of the grill hood. It receives less direct heat than the main cooking surface, making it perfect for keeping already-cooked food warm without overcooking it while you finish grilling other items. It is also a great place to toast buns, warm bread, or slow-cook delicate items like vegetables and fish that need gentler heat. American Outdoor Grills include a stainless steel warming rack as a standard feature, which adds useful additional cooking real estate without requiring any extra accessories or attachments.
