Direct Vent Pipe

These are two completely different venting systems designed for different types of appliances and they cannot be mixed or swapped. Wood burning chimney pipe, such as the 8DM, 8HT, 12DM, and 12HT series in our collection, is used for wood burning fireplaces, wood stoves, and high-heat appliances. It is a double wall insulated pipe designed to handle extremely high flue temperatures and exhaust combustion gases safely up through the roof. Direct vent pipe, such as the DVL, DVP, and SLP series, is used exclusively for gas appliances like direct vent gas fireplaces. It operates as a sealed two-pipe system where one pipe exhausts combustion gases out and the other draws fresh combustion air in from outside, making it airtight and safe for indoor use.

The DM series, which includes the 8DM and 12DM pipes, is a standard double wall wood burning chimney pipe rated to withstand flue gas temperatures up to 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit. It is suitable for most standard wood burning fireplaces and wood stoves operating under normal conditions. The HT series, which includes the 8HT and 12HT pipes, is a high temperature version rated up to 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit. The HT pipe is required in applications where higher sustained temperatures are expected, such as with high-efficiency wood burning stoves, coal-burning appliances, or in situations where creosote buildup and resulting chimney fires are a concern. Always match the pipe series to the temperature rating required by your appliance manufacturer.

The correct pipe diameter is specified by the manufacturer of your fireplace or stove and is listed in the appliance's installation manual. You must use the exact diameter specified, as undersizing reduces draft and can be a fire hazard, while oversizing results in poor draft performance and excessive creosote buildup. Our collection offers 8-inch inner diameter pipe (8DM and 8HT series) and 12-inch inner diameter pipe (12DM and 12HT series) for wood burning applications, as well as multiple sizes for direct vent gas systems. If you are unsure of the correct size, check the collar on top of your fireplace or stove where the pipe connects, or contact us before ordering.

No. Chimney pipe systems are brand-specific and series-specific, meaning you must use components from the same manufacturer and the same pipe series throughout the entire installation. For example, you cannot mix 8DM pipe sections from IHP with termination caps or elbows from a different brand, even if the dimensions appear similar. The locking mechanisms, wall thickness, and clearance specifications vary between manufacturers and series. Mixing components voids product warranties, can create unsafe gaps or improper connections, and may not pass inspection. Always order all pipe sections, elbows, flashings, and termination caps from the same system series.

A firestop spacer is a required safety component that is installed wherever a chimney pipe passes through a combustible floor, ceiling, or framing member. It maintains the proper clearance between the hot outer surface of the pipe and the surrounding combustible material, preventing heat transfer that could cause a fire inside the wall or ceiling cavity. US building codes require firestop spacers at every floor and ceiling penetration in a multi-story installation. Our collection includes standard firestop spacers, 30-degree angled firestop spacers for offset runs, and attic insulation shields, all matched to the specific pipe series they are designed for.

Rigid pipe sections are the standard straight lengths used to build most of a chimney run. They come in lengths of 6, 12, 18, 24, 36, and 48 inches and are used for all vertical and properly supported horizontal runs. Flex vent pipe is a corrugated flexible pipe that is used in situations where a rigid pipe cannot make a clean connection, such as when relining an existing masonry chimney, navigating a tight or irregular offset, or completing the connection between a fireplace appliance and the first rigid section. Flex pipe is not intended to replace rigid sections throughout an entire system but is an important solution for specific installation challenges. Our collection includes both rigid sections and compressed flex pipe kits for direct vent gas systems.

Yes, termination cap selection matters for both safety and performance. The cap at the top of the chimney or vent pipe prevents rain, birds, and debris from entering the system while allowing combustion gases to escape. The correct cap depends on your pipe series, the diameter of your pipe, and whether your installation is vertical (through the roof) or horizontal (through a wall). For vertical wood burning systems, round termination caps and square termination caps are the most common options and must match your specific pipe series, such as 8DM or 12DM. For direct vent gas systems, termination cap style also determines how well the system handles wind and back-drafting. Our collection includes vertical, horizontal, trapezoid, and snorkel-style termination caps all matched to their respective pipe systems.

Yes, in most cases professional installation is strongly recommended, and in many US jurisdictions it is required by code. Chimney pipe installations involve penetrating floors, ceilings, walls, and roofs, each of which requires specific fire-rated clearances, correctly installed firestop spacers, proper flashing and storm collars at the roofline, and a correctly sized termination cap. An improperly installed chimney system is one of the leading causes of house fires in the United States. A licensed chimney professional or HVAC contractor familiar with the specific pipe system you are using will ensure the installation is safe, code-compliant, and eligible for your appliance warranty.
